The Railway Children at Roundhouse Theatre

Why see The Railway Children?

The Railway Children at the in , ,

The London stage hit will open in Toronto in May. And a new, 1,000-seat, state-of-the-art theatre, The Roundhouse which is being built adjacent to Toronto's historic Roundhouse Park, at Bremner Blvd. and Lower Simcoe Street.

The Railway Children is based on the 1906 novel by beloved British author Edith Nesbit. It's about three children who are reduced to poverty when their father is unjustly arrested for being a spy, so they move to a cottage near a railway station in Yorkshire and take part in a series of adventures that touch on the true notion of human compassion.

Roundhouse Park is home to the Toronto Railway Historical Association. This close alliance with an existing railway museum closely echoes the play's 2008 beginnings at the National Railway Museum in York, England, which was followed by a 2010 run at Waterloo Station in London.

The director Cruden promises that the show's 14 adult and 10 children's roles will be cast with a 100 per cent Canadian ensemble.

The show's biggest star is a 60-tonne vintage steam locomotive.

Audience: The Railway Children is suitable for audiences of all ages.

A real treat - go and see it before the run ends (soon)

I must admit to some trepidation after reading these reviews butnmy 8 yr old son and I went this (very hot) weekend and thoroughly enjoyed this evening. Wonderful use of the staging, excellent transformational performances by all of the actors, overall a wonderful family night out especially given the context of the railway historical park in which this theatre is set - great place for anshort picnic pre-performance. Thestre was lovely and cool (not cold). Highly recommended. Seems to be a sale on now for $50 per seat given nearing the end of its run (sadly, deserves to have a good long run). ... Read more

Thoroughly enjoyed this presentation

I guess mostly people with negative reactions are inclined to take the time to write reviews but my family thoroughly enjoyed this play. My 6 year old grandson really enjoyed the play and even our 4 year old got a lot from it (although the loud train noises were a little scarey:). The presentation was true to the time period and the British flavour of the book. The unique staging of the play with moving platforms was really entertaining; the three main actors were excellent and the supporting cast was great. If the seating was more comfortable I would have given 5 stars but as previous writers noted the seating is too cramped and temperature control in a tent is obviously difficult. Large or tall people around us were obviously uncomfortable and a heavy set woman beside me left at intermission. As a retired school teacher I highly recommend this play. If your children enjoy good literature and don't expect a musical, an animated cartoon, guns or explosions--go, you'll love it. ... Read more

Memorable Performance

Someone commented on the fact that adults were playing the part of children. Since it was a 2 hr. play, it would be impossible for children to remember their lines. From that point of view the writer did a marvelous job of 'taking us back in time'; the 3 actors who played children did so with such tact and grace that it was refreshing to watch them. We have never seen a set production done this way and it was done very well. We came away very pleased with the production and would recommend it highly. The only fault - not much leg/arm room. ...
