Customer Reviews for The Railway Children

South Simcoe Railway Corporartion
Maybe this will ignite some interest in the major part that railways played in building Canada. We operated steam locomotives for many years just north of Tornto and are now working to get #136 back in operation. This, built in 1883, before Canada became a nation is the locomotive that was used in the CBC's "National Dream" and is truly representative of Canada's past railway history.
A real treat - go and see it before the run ends (soon)
I must admit to some trepidation after reading these reviews butnmy 8 yr old son and I went this (very hot) weekend and thoroughly enjoyed this evening. Wonderful use of the staging, excellent transformational performances by all of the actors, overall a wonderful family night out especially given the context of the railway historical park in which this theatre is set - great place for anshort picnic pre-performance. Thestre was lovely and cool (not cold). Highly recommended. Seems to be a sale on now for $50 per seat given nearing the end of its run (sadly, deserves to have a good long run).
A great show
After reading your reviews I almost gave away my ticket to Railway Children. I am really glad that I didn't. It was a great show. The acting was super, the set ingenious and a good story too. The seats are a bit hard but certainly not unbearable. I dressed in layers and was very comfortable on a warm day. Certainly a must see for the family and anyone who enjoys a well staged play.
Memorable Performance
Someone commented on the fact that adults were playing the part of children. Since it was a 2 hr. play, it would be impossible for children to remember their lines. From that point of view the writer did a marvelous job of 'taking us back in time'; the 3 actors who played children did so with such tact and grace that it was refreshing to watch them. We have never seen a set production done this way and it was done very well. We came away very pleased with the production and would recommend it highly. The only fault - not much leg/arm room.
Thoroughly enjoyed this presentation
I guess mostly people with negative reactions are inclined to take the time to write reviews but my family thoroughly enjoyed this play. My 6 year old grandson really enjoyed the play and even our 4 year old got a lot from it (although the loud train noises were a little scarey:). The presentation was true to the time period and the British flavour of the book. The unique staging of the play with moving platforms was really entertaining; the three main actors were excellent and the supporting cast was great. If the seating was more comfortable I would have given 5 stars but as previous writers noted the seating is too cramped and temperature control in a tent is obviously difficult. Large or tall people around us were obviously uncomfortable and a heavy set woman beside me left at intermission. As a retired school teacher I highly recommend this play. If your children enjoy good literature and don't expect a musical, an animated cartoon, guns or explosions--go, you'll love it.
Great Show!
I read the reveiws on this site prior to going and was sure to be disapointed, but I must say I truly enjoyed every minute. Yes, the seating was cramped but better than some sections of the Royal Alex. Although the children were played by adults, they convinced me early in the show that they were children as they remembered a sad but wonderful time in thier lives. Thought it was fantastic and had me almost crying at the happy ending. I loved the interaction with the audiance and the actors and the set made it such an intimate setting so that nothing was missed. And the train...wow
