Why see Come From Away?
The Tony-Winning Show Makes Its Transfer to Elgin Theatre!
Now playing on Broadway, this touching musical celebrating the strength of human compassion makes its transfer to Toronto's Elgin Theatre, February 5 2019, after its successful return to the Royal Alexandra Theatre! Created by Canadian husband and wife team Irene Snakoff and David Hein, the rippling impact of 9/11 across the world is felt in a Newfoundland town, when no less than 38 transatlantic flights are ordered to land.
The Broadway production has proven a storming success and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning Best Direction of a Musical. It also won three awards at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical. Thoroughly researched and based on interviews with residents and passengers, the show explores how this tiny community opened its hearts and homes to their unexpected guests.
What Is Come From Away About?
As the full horror of the terror attacks on On September 11th, 2001 became apparent, the US closed its airspace grounding thousands of passenger jets globally. Thirty-eight of them were forced to land in Gander, a remote Newfoundland town with a population of just 9,000 people.
The musical tells the story of a particular set of passengers from just one of the grounded planes and the hardy Gander residents who wholeheartedly welcomed them into their homes. Among this diverse set of characters is American Airlines' first female pilot, a gay couple both called Colin, and an Egyptian chef, who fears a frosty reception from the community - only to be proved wrong entirely. Weaving together all of their storylines, the show creates an affirming portrait of human connection in the most trying of circumstances.
