The Audience

Why see The Audience?

The Tony-Winning PLay Comes to Toronto

Peter Morgan, the Oscar nominated screenwriter of The Queen, presents his next royal drama. The Audience takes you inside the walls of Buckingham Palace as we witness Queen Elizabeth II's weekly meetings with all the UK's Prime Ministers who served during her reign, from Winston Churchill to David Cameron. Elizabeth remains a fixed point in history, welcoming each new Prime Minister as her experiences deepen and her insights strengthen.

Originally premiereing in London, The Audience transferred to Broadway in 2015 with Helen Mirren in the lead role. Wearing the crown for this Toronto production is Canadian theatre royalty Fiona Reid, best known for playing Cathy on the CBS show King of Kensington.

What is The Audience About?

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her 12 Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, a promise that even prevents them from speaking to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence in spectacular fashion - and cleverly imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their monarch. From Churchill through to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional that are sometimes intimate and sometimes explosive.

Engaging review of history!

My daughter who just moved back from London after living there for 3 years attended the show with me on January 18. She thought the show was perfect for her and it shed more light for us both on how the British system works. The acting was solid and the content made what could be very dry material very human and engaging. I recommend this show to anyone who wants to understand that those in positions of power are very human and that a system only works well when the players understand their roles and support each other. The queen was truly the glue throughout many different prime minister changes but the royal status could not have been maintained without the support and respect for her that each prime minister maintained. ...
