Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar at Princess of Wales Theatre

Why see Jesus Christ Superstar?

the Lloyd Webber hit comes to toronto!

Following off a hit run in London and North American tour, this Olivier Award-winning new production will make a home in Toronto. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's groundbreaking musical laces together biblical drama with a propulsive rock and funk score. Director Timothy Sheader reinvents the story for the modern age, paring back the more overblown aspects of the original for a truly rocking show!

Originally starting life in 1970 as a concept album, the show was ALW's first to debut on Broadway ahead of London in 1971. Featuring the well-known hits "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him," Superstar is a tremendously powerful musical that retains a large fan base the world over.

WHAT IS JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR ABOUT?

A bombastic rock opera based on the Gospels, Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the last week of Jesus' life, heavily focusing on his relationship with Judas Iscariot. Imbued with modern sensibilities and contemporary political and social themes, this show is about a very human Jesus Christ, one who must reckon with his impending death.

Dazzling!

We all know the story but this incredible interpretation was simply a delight for the senses. We were bombarded with amazing choreography, gorgeous music and "heavenly" singing. The energy and pace that the story is presented will leave you breathless. It is certainly a "must view"! Do not miss this treasure! ... Read more

F**KING AMAZING

Amazing. When we sat down we were like, where’s the orchestra? Then the curtain opened and it was just…wow. Not generally a fan of minimalist sets but this one was perfect. Set, costume design, amazing. Choreography—amazing. Music—amazing. We were 3rd row and saw everyone up close. Their acting, singing, all amazing. Direction—edging amazing. If you don’t love this performance, I am sorry, there is something very wrong with you ... Read more

Inventive and musically satisfying production

I saw the saturday matinee and was impressed by the production's slickness and also the impressive sound and lighting design. I was very disappointed that there was no prior announcements that the roles of Jesus and Judas would be played by understudies, who though quite good, gave me no option to get my money back or swap my premium price ticket to see the proper cast as reviewed in the papers. I think that Mirvish should be upfront about this but now have left a bad taste in my mouth as I feel I have been gouged. I shall be wary of seeing anything Mirvish puts out in the future. ...
