Why see The Heart of Robin Hood?
Robin Hood Redux
David Farr's bold re-imagining of the legend of Robin Hood comes to the Royal Alexandria Theatre this December. Flipping the centuries old folklore on its head, The Heart of Robin Hood features a band of not so Merry Men and a Robin Hood who is nothing more than an opportunistic, petty criminal. But fear not, because the sharp-witted Maid Marion is on hand to discover Robin's inner hero. A hugely enjoyable romp, featuring plenty of swashbuckling, daredevil stunts and, in a nod to its Royal Shakespeare Company roots, gender swapping comedy, The Heart of Robin Hood is a fantastic rollicking adventure!
The show first premiered in London in 2011, where it was showered with praise for its stunning design and choreography. The director Gisil Orn Gardarsson integrates all manner of acrobatic feats into the action, from rope swings to thrilling sword fights, and the set itself is a thing of theatrical wonder, comprised of grassy knolls, oak trees and an on-stage pond.
What is the Heart of Robin Hood About?
In the heart of Sherwood Forest there dwells a band of outlaws, led by none other than Robin Hood. But hold on just a second, this isn't the fabled, noble hero who steals from the rich and gives to the poor, and looks extremely dashing in a pair of tights. This Robin is a cutthroat bandit, who steals from the rich and keeps it for himself.
It's up to Maid Marion to turn Robin into the dapper do-gooder that we know and love. As the evil Prince John threatens the land, Marion infiltrates Sherwood Forest's band of criminals, disguised as a man, and sets about converting Robin from scoundrel to saviour.
